Guatemala’s ‘Day of the Dead’ celebration took to the air when Mayan Indians recalled an ancient tradition of flying enormous kites to communicate with their departed loved ones.
Each year, Guatemalans observe numerous traditions to commemorate the dead. But in addition to the usual graveside observances, Guatemalans have another, infinitely more colourful tradition that involves flying enormous kites over the graves in an attempt to communicate with the dead. This Mayan tradition began in ancient times is still followed. The kites are constructed out of bamboo, cloth, paper and wire. These days, kite-fliers also use more modern materials.
