In our countries Christmas is celebrated on December 24th Eve, sometimes on Dec 25th and that's it.

I'm not German, I'm Belgian ;-)

"Weihnachten" in Germany lasts two days. On December 26th they visit their family and their friends.

Christ-Kind offers gifts to the children on December 24th families and friends.

Like in my country, in the Netherlands and the North-East of France, Germany has also a Saint Nicholas festival on December 6th especially for kids.
References :
http://itsxmastime.com/Christmas_Worldwide.php

My wife's parents were of German and Polish descent... it's common to celebrate on the Eve in several European countries. Her family opened their gifts on Christmas Eve.
