Why do people in Germany celebrate Christmas on your Christmas eve and do they have any Christmas customs and traditions that are different than American Christmas traditions?
I thought everyone celebrated Christmas from December 25th to January 5th(that is how long Christmas lasts.

My wife’s parents were of German and Polish descent… it’s common to celebrate on the Eve in several European countries. Her family opened their gifts on Christmas Eve.

In our countries Christmas is celebrated on December 24th Eve, sometimes on Dec 25th and that’s it.

    I’m not German, I’m Belgian ;-)

"Weihnachten" in Germany lasts two days. On December 26th they visit their family and their friends.

Christ-Kind offers gifts to the children on December 24th families and friends.

Like in my country, in the Netherlands and the North-East of France, Germany has also a Saint Nicholas festival on December 6th especially for kids.
