do you celebrate christmas on christmas eve or christmas day?

my mother and i have been having this argument weither to have it on christmas eve or christmas day. which day do you celebrate it? or which way is the correct traditional way to?

Both — because we host European students and THEY celebrate on the 24th.
So, we have a "sit down" fancy dinner on Christmas Eve with their traditional foods. Then we open any gifts from Europe and their family that night, plus our stockings.
On Christmas morning, we open our "American" presents and then have a more relaxed Christmas dinner around the tree.
There is no RIGHT or WRONG answer — compromise! Why ruin Christmas with such a silly argument?

The traditional way is to open presents on Christmas morning when you wake up. Though, saying that, everyone does it differently. It’s best to go with whatever your family traditions are. There’s no need to argue about it. In my family my parents were divorced. So we had Christmas eve with my mother and Christmas day with my dad. We opened presents on both days. Now that I have my own kids I like to do Christmas on Christmas day. We’re having a big dinner on Christmas eve though.

I do both. Mostly because my Husband and I have combined our Christmas traditions. Christmas eve, my family always had tortier pie, and we didn’t open any gifts that night. Christmas day we’d get up do the gifts, that was it. My husband on the other hand, just went to church on Christmas eve, and did gifts on Christmas day and a big turkey dinner. So we’re combining the two (except the church part do to personal reasons). there is no "proper" way to do Christmas

My parents are divorced, so i do one on the eve and the other parent gets CHRISTmas day. but when i have kids i wanna do their gifts on the eve, like before they go to bed. they would get CHRISTmas jammys and a family game to play. we would make gingerbread houses in the afternoon, and then the next day we would spend it with family. remember, CHRISTmas isn’t about the gifts, its about being with family. remember why we celebrate CHRISTmas? because of the birth of Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior! it is His birthday, so don’t make His day all about who can buy the kids the best gift. merry CHRISTmas!

In my family it was always a 2 day thing…… the way we did it growing up was that we went to my grandparents house for supper on the 24th, after supper we would attend Christmas mass and then we would open our presents at midnight, Christmas morning we would open our stockings and have our big Christmas dinner that evening…. now that i’m grown and living with my boyfriend, we go to my grandparents house on the 24th and do the big supper and gift and everything in one evening then my boyfriend and i go home and wake up Christmas morning and exchange our gifts and have coffee and relax together for a while then it’s off to his family to do the whole gift and supper thing again….. i guess as long as you celebrate with the ones you love, how and when you do it is secondary… :) Merry Christmas
