i have parts of the family that speaks swahili (i know i spelled that so wrong) and who celebrates kwanaza. i have never celebrated it and my mom does every year. does this mean im letting my religion down?
Kwanzaa is a secular celebration, not a religious one. You are not letting your faith "down" by not celebrating it. It is a celebration of African American culture and the family, that’s all. The History Channel had a neat thing about it. You can read parts of it here —–> http://www.history.com/content/kwanzaa

No. If you don’t want to celebrate a particular holiday, don’t celebrate it. I know Christians who don’t celebrate Christmas. It says nothing about your faith or if you are letting your religion down. If someone tries to put you on a guilt trip about it, don’t let them.

If you do not understand the the tradition then you shouldn’t practice it anyway. And just because your mom celebrates it doesn’t make it important to your religion.

Kwanzaa is a secular celebration, not a religious one. Most of my African American friends ignore Kwanzaa–and you may do the same.

No, it is the spirit behind that matters. But what is the harm in mixing up with your family and celebrating. Have a large heart. Even leaders celebrate all religions festival where they may have been invited to by their subordinates. In fact it is a great honour to be part of any religious celebrations . And remember God is one.
