What do you and your families do to celebrate Christmas for what it really is?

My family has never celebrated Christmas as the birth of Christ, instead its always been presents and trees and lights. I have a new family and would like to find a way to incorporate more of Christ into Christmas, do you do anything special? Sing songs, read the Bible…pray? I’d like some ideas for my family if you wouldn’t mind sharing.

Well to me it is Jesus’s B-day not like the other people say. This will be my baby’s first Christmas too and I like you would also like to bring more Christ into it. I believe churches do different activities and you could join in on those. But of course presents and a tree and santa claus are still fun! I’m just going to keep those but also make sure that my kid will know the true meaning.

Why do we celebrate Christmas the way we do?

Why do we celebrate christmas with decorated trees, lights everywhere, $3000 worth of gifts for everyone, santa claus? Where did we go from worshiping Jesus to Santa Claus and all the material things he will bring us?

If you celebrate it "Right" chances are the question isnt directed toward you. As one of those that celebrates it "wrong," i think its because we lost our values somewhere along the line. Seems like christmas is about greed now. What can i get or what should i give. If this person spends $100 on me, then maybe i should do the same. Its really a stupid way of thinking and 80% of the population is guilty of it. I myself have stopped. I only give gifts to the kids. As they shouldnt be punished for the parents lack of understanding.

If you don’t celebrate Christmas, what do you say to people like store clerks who wish you a Merry Christmas?

I only want to hear from people who do not celebrate Christmas, please.

It’s a personal and/or religious decision to make. Jehovah’s Witnesses do not celebrate holidays, and for them, they could always respond with a kindly, "God bless" or "Have a nice day." Someone who is Jewish may respond with "Happy Hanukkah!" because that is what THEY are celebrating.

Oh, and limiting your responses is not a proper thing in the etiquette section to do!

Have a polite day.

Why do you celebrate Christmas if you are offended by Christ ?

People offended by someone saying Merry Christmas or bless you now days. Even though you don’t like being told this, you will celebrate this day with food and family and presents .Most will get the day off with pay and not complain that they didn’t have the chance to work . Is this hypicritical?

I am Wiccan, and I am not offended by people saying Merry Christmas. In fact, my family is Christian – Catholics for that matter. But Christianity did not suit me, I found my own path. My husband and his family are also Christian. Now we have kids and a 2 religion household, and we want our kids to learn both of our belief systems. We celebrate Winter Solstice together, and that is when we do gifts with our kids. Then we celebrate Christmas Eve together with my family, and Christmas day with my in-laws. I do not mind celebrating with our families, and am cetainly not offended by what they believe. They know I am Wiccan and that what I believe is different. But we have a respect for each other’s beliefs, and sometimes my family even asks me to tell them things about my beliefs. Yes, I tell them all Merry Christmas, just as I would say Happy Hannukah to anyone Jewish that I know. It is not offensive, just respectful. And though I may not be celebrating on Christmas for religious purposes, I find nothing wrong in spending the day together with family :)
